Understanding Assembly District 51

What is AD51 —

and Why Is It Important?

California State Assembly District 51 (AD51) is one of 80 districts in the state, each representing nearly half a million residents. The structure of state government mirrors the federal system, and legislative balance determines whether meaningful reform can occur. This page explains why AD51 plays a critical role in the direction of California.

Why is it important?

Two reasons.

First, our state cannot function without it. Our state government is structured like the federal government. Our Governor is the chief executive officer for our state, as the US President is for our nation. The California State Senate has 40 Senators, and serves a similar function to the 100 member US Senate. Our State Assembly serves a similar function as the US House of Representatives. The US Senate and House are together called “congress”. The State Senate and Assembly are called the “legislature”.

Second, neither the President nor the Governor can get anything done if the legislative branch (congress or the legislature) is so dominated by the opposing party that it can override any veto by the President or Governor. This over 2/3 concentration of one party or the other is called a “supermajority”. These are uncommon, but California currently has Democrat supermajorities in both the Senate and the Assembly. This means if we elect a Republican Governor in 2026, he or she will be prevented from accomplishing anything. California voters need to break the supermajorities by electing a handful of additional Republicans in the Senate and Assembly. We have the opportunity to take a step in that direction right here in AD51, because if elected, I will be replacing a Democrat.

Why This Race Matters

AD51 is not just another legislative seat. It is an opportunity to restore balance in Los Angeles and ensure that executive leadership can work with a legislature that represents diverse viewpoints.

Structural reform begins with individual districts.
